FAQ's
DENTAL INSURANCE FAQ’s
What is the difference between PPO and HMO insurance?
- PPO’s, or “preferred provider organizations,” are flexible insurance plans that prefer patients to use their “in-network” dentists but will generally also provide “out-of-network” benefits if the patient wishes to choose their own dentist.
- HMO’s, or “health maintenance organizations,” will only cover visits with dentists who are contracted in their directory. HMO plans typically advertise lower premiums, but the providers who accept them can be quite limited (usually corporate dental offices). This sometimes leads to longer waits for appointments and varying levels of patient experience and service.
What does it mean to be in-network vs out-of-network?
- A dentist is considered “in-network” with an insurance provider if they pay fees towards advertising directly within the insurance network’s directory of “preferred providers.” PPO plans can also provide the same amount in “out-of-network” benefits for patients to use with any dentist of their choice.
Do I save money by seeing an in-network provider?
- While insurance companies may advertise lower fees if you use their “preferred” dentist directory, the overall experience can vary. Many of these offices must compensate for their insurance agreements with higher volumes and therefore have longer wait times, rushed appointments, frequent staff changes, and/or high-pressure upselling of unnecessary treatments, which can make care less consistent and potentially more costly in the long run.
Can I use insurance with an out-of-network provider?
- Yes! If you have PPO dental insurance, you are generally allowed to use your plan at ANY dentist of your choice. Many top-rated dentists are going to be out-of-network with many insurance companies because they do not feel the need to advertise in their directories. This doesn’t mean you can’t see them, though. At Autumn Family Dentistry, we pass on the cost savings of the advertising to our patients, oftentimes saving them more money than if they went to an in network dentist.
Do I have to file my own claims?
- No, Autumn Family Dentistry can file claims on your behalf if you do not wish to pay for services upfront.
Do dental insurance benefits roll over if I don’t use them up?
- No, most dental insurance plans only allow a maximum of $1000-$2000 per year, and if you don’t use it, you will lose it.
How does dental insurance differ from medical insurance?
- Dental insurance usually has low yearly maximums (usually around $1000-$2000), meaning the plan will only pay up to that amount each year. Exams and cleanings are generally covered, but once you reach that max limit, you pay for any additional care.
- Medical insurance, on the other hand, generally doesn’t have a strict annual maximum. After meeting your deductible and out-of-pocket limit, most medical care is covered for the rest of the year.
Do you provide cost estimates before procedures?
- Yes, we provide detailed treatment plans with cost estimates and can send pre-authorizations to your insurance company for even more accurate estimates.
What happens if I change or lose dental insurance coverage?
- We offer complimentary insurance verification to help you understand your benefits. If you lose dental coverage, you can still keep up with exams and cleanings as a self-pay patient. Staying on top of preventive care is the best way to protect your dental health and keep costs manageable.
